Generation Y Believes in Change

Generation Y strongly believes in change (both the idea of change and the concept that they are makers of change). Having grown up in classroom settings where they have been invited into conversation, welcomed to help in decision making, applauded for flagging fault in process today's youth know that their thoughts and opinions are valued and can impact change.

They have also grown up surrounded by change. The way technology has changed our daily living. The way communication has changed our social networks. Politics, music, and justice have all changed throughout their life span.

Much like the Baby Boomers, Generation Y believes that their efforts can change the ways of the world. And there is truth in that belief. Generation Y has the social connectivity to create grassroots efforts. They have tech skills which can make significant contribution to volunteer campaigns. They have education talents which make them key community leaders.

How to engage youth...

There is no secret formula for engaging youth but there are some key points to keep in mind:

Communicate. Outline the big issue, the goals of your projects, who it will affect, ask them for ideas, involve them with planning, give feedback often.
Empowerment. Give youth a specific task and they will run with it.
Collaboration. (Marries with communication). Young people work well in team situations. They build on each other's ideas.

Youth engagement is a powerful tool to further grassroots efforts, organizations and goals. Youth WANT to feel meaning in their lives and actions - engage them!

Youth Delegates to G8/G20 Summit

Global Vision is recruiting Canadian youth ages 16 to 24 to particpate as Youth Delegates in 17 cities across Canada to learn more about the issues in the G8 and G20 Summits.

Participants will learn about the summit process, work in teams to discuss summit issues and learn more about Canada's role as G8 President.

Further, the Global Vision website offers information on the National Youth Caucus (May 11-14) where selected youth will learning the in-depth about the issues to be discussed at the summits and also have a chance to meet the Prime Minister.

From the National G8 Youth Caucus 13 Canadian students (representing each province and territory) will be selected will be selected as Youth Ambassadors and will have the opportunity to participate in a Model G8 in Muskoka, Ontario.

Youth = global awareness

Much of the media around Earth Hour is on how one person can make a difference to global awareness surrounding climate change. How can YOU make a difference?

• Be an eco-activist in your home, school, community

• Create awareness of climate change through conversation, artwork, photography, volunteerism and action

There are ways in which your own personal actions can help climate change

• Conserve energy by turning off lights, powering off your computer

• Carry a reusable bag rather than buying a plastic one with purchases

• Consider the packaging of an item before you buy an item

• Support local farmers

Earth Hour

This Saturday Mar. 27 at 8:30pm the WWF is asking the world to turn the lights off to shed light on global warming. It is a call to action to actively participate in sending a message to communities, leaders and the world.

Youth will gather (as shown in the video below) and unplug themselves for an hour. They will bring attention to an important issue - collectively. The media is already watching, leading up to this international event.

It is a simple action which states so much. It is non-aggressive yet powerful. Will the world turn off (in their respective time zones)? We'll be watching.

Youth Positive

Today's youth rally for change.

Their grandparent's generation accepted the world as it was - the good and the bad. They dealt the hand they got...and learned to 'make do' with little.

How times do change. Generation Y will not, WILL NOT, accept the world 'as is'. Further, they know they don't have to. Thanks to Baby Boomers challenge against social injustice and other generations which have taken up the fight...today's youth know it is their right...and role...to be activists for change.

They not only have the passion for change. They also have the education, skill set, experience and social network to make change happen. They are a powerful group. The most remarkable tool they have is that they BELIEVE.

Generation Y are change-makers. They take on an issue on global and community levels. Social injustice may have met its match with this generation.

Global Youth Culture

Youth can use their "voice" for change - even without speaking a word. Photographs capture more than words can say. Writing creates a permanent record. These two mediums are tools for youth to bring about change in their global culture.

Taking it Global is conducting a contest in the mediums of photography and writing, respectively, on what Global Youth Culture means to YOU!

The competition is open to youth aged between 16-32 years of age. It closes April 10, 2010.

In addition to prizes, the winners (and other top entries) will be showcased at the World Youth Congress in Istanbul-Turkey and in Egypt.

Canadian Youth Internship

The Federal Public Sector Youth Internship Program is sponsored by Human Resources and Skills Development Canada, (partnered with the YMCA), wherby youth may apply for internship opportunities for Canadians aged 15 - 30 years old.

A Federal Public Sector Youth Internship is an assignment providing youth (high school and post-secondary respectively) practical experience. The program is aimed at youth who need it most; "...[setting] a full 50% of the internships for youth who have not completed high school or face multiple barriers to employment, 30% for high school graduates and 20% for youth who have graduated from College or University."

Youth programs, such as this one, are valuable for developing skills, gaining on-the-job experience, learning from a mentor, setting career goals and motivation about employment and futures of the participants.

Youth Summer Jobs

Though it is only March, youth need to start planning their summer job goals. Summer jobs provide experience, communications development, wages, engagement and training to youth. Where does one start in the job search?

Ontario residents have the opportunity to start their own business with the help of the Ministry of Training, Colleges and University. The Summer Company program provides: "...hands-on business coaching, mentoring from local community business leaders and awards of up to $3,000."

Other youth summer programs run by the Ministry include: Rangers working in natural resource management, summer law student (for 1st and 2nd year students), Aboriginal Youth Work Exchange and a disadvantaged youth summer work program. (Click on any of the links to learn more about programs).

The Youth Canada website has some good resources for youth about knowing their rights in the workplace. They also provide resources on legal issues related to starting your own business.

A summer job is not only an introduction into the workforce for youth it is also a way to make a meaningful contribution to the community.

Throughout time, musician's have inspired youth. They speak (or sing if you prefer) the politics, injustice, culture, values, expectation, indifference of the generations. Some say they speak the truth while other say they stir the pot.

Twitter was all a-twitter yesterday with the hashtag #ChangeCamp2010. It was a meeting in Toronto where people gathered to discuss, engage, share citizen-driven change-making.

Even those not in attendance could chime in via twitter (join the conversation HERE or follow @ChangeCamp on Twitter). The conversations showed interested people engaged in community development and change-making.

There is also a Facebook fan page to follow the conversation (ChangeCamp on Facebook)

According to their fan page, ChangeCamp's goals are:

1) help governments become more open, transparent, participatory, innovative, efficient and effective

2) help citizens become more connected to each other around their civic passions in the place they call home

Olympic Tradition

The Olympics are a powerful motivator for youth worldwide. For a moment in time, the world puts aside their political agendas, their economic differences and language barriers to compete in sport.

In the weeks of the Olympics, youth see sportsmanship, victory with humility, defeat with honour. They cheer on underdogs (who may just win) and follow athletes who have their reputation because they are the best at what they do.

The Olympics show Generation Y that a team is not just a local group - but a whole sporting community.

It shows a nation can get news coverage not just from catastrophic events but from demonstrations of personal best.

The Olympic Black Power Salute

In 1968, American athletes Tommie Smith and John Carlos made headlines by their Olympic Black Power Salute.

They took to the podium in black socks (to represent black poverty), items around their neck (scarf and beads respectively) and black gloves on one hand respectively.

Following their salute, there was much discussed about their support of black power, of poverty in black america and the historic road of the black people. However, there action did fully render positive results.

There was backlash about these young men bringing politics into the Olympic ring.

Smith and Carlos themselves were ostracized by the sporting community after their salute.

It is a good topic for a youth debate: Did Smith and Carlos do the right thing in their black power salute? Did they tarnish the Olympic spirit or shed light on a suffering people?

Motivating Generation Y

Youth today have a toolkit complete with education, technical savvy, passion, loyalty and communication skills. How do you motivate youth to use these tools for change?

Through grassroots efforts. Working on a "cause" at a local level, welcoming youth to use their time and effort for an issue close to their hearts, and growing the movement upwards from their collective efforts.

Youth want to be part of something bigger than themselves. They want to make a difference. They want to be engaged and they want to hear feedback that their efforts are contributing to positive change.

Born Keinan Abdi Warsame in Somalia "K'naan" means traveller in Somali. This song is not just an anthem of the world cup but that of the youth worldwide.

Olympic Spirit

The countdown is on to the February 12 opening of the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics.

Schools, worldwide, will be using the Olympics as teachable moments to youth. The Students LIVE! program has 24 Vancouver-area students attending the Olympics and share their experiences via social media. Going abroad for summer 2010

If you or a youth whom you know wants to go abroad in the summer of 2010 there are web resources to help you research.

The Government of Canada has resources for working abroad including youth opportunities and tips. There are also organizations who sponsor youth for international programs.

Should you wish to work or volunteer beyond your own city (but not internationally) Katimavik offers Canadian youth the experience of volunteering in communities across Canada.

The United Nations Professional Placements (UNPP) Programme is specific to Canadians in helping with the UN humanitarian work.

Now is the time for youth to act globally.

Yéle Haiti

Wyclef Jean (award winning muscian and Goodwill Ambassador) established Yéle Haiti in 2005. He is also a Hatian-American.

Yéle Haiti's mission is "Whether utilizing local hip-hop musicians to deliver awareness messages in forgotten neighborhoods or bringing his famous friends to Haiti to support the movement, what Wyclef radiates is profound wishes for the country."

Jean has come under attack this week regarding Yéle Haiti, his role and money. As a hip-hop artist and humanitarian - Jean retorted these accusations with this video:

Whether you are pro-Yéle Haiti or against - one should give respect to an artist who attempts to use his influence to bring attention to a cause.

Youth contribution to Haiti

With the massive earthquake in Haiti, many youth may feel a spark to do something.

Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada is advising that Canadians best efforts would be to donate money (over clothing or food) to experienced humanitarian organizations.

The Canadian Red Cross, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières and World Vision are a few of the already-on-the-ground humanitarian organizations working in Haiti.

Why should youth fundraise cash rather than clothing or even food for disaster relief? Money is useful. Shipping and transport of skids of clothing and food takes energy, fuel, transportation, customs delays and sorting. Time and energy can be saved when organizations can use donated funds to get supplies directly and often locally.

What can your youth group do to help Haiti?

Fundraise and donate. Sell tickets to a danceathon. Bake sale. A walkathon. Write a presentation, play or song lyrics about the earthquake.

Project Hero offers education to youth of fallen soliders

McMaster University, McGill University, Mohawk College, Niagara College Canada, have all joined Project Hero offering scholarships to children of fallen Canadian soldiers starting in September 2009. Other post secondary particpants include; University of Ottawa, University of Windsor, Memorial University and University of Calgary.

Specific for youth applying to Project Hero between September 1, 2009 and August 31, 2014, this endeavour recognizes the sacrifice of military families. At McMaster, eligible students will receive a tuition waiver for 4 years of study, plus in the first year of study a room in residence and meal plan. Other universities have different bursery plans for Project Hero.

Project Hero was co-founded by Honorary Lieutenant-Colonel Kevin Reed and Retired General Rick Hillier to provide support to the children of fallen Canadian soliders killed in action.

Tools for Change

In order to bring change about...youth need the tools to get the job done.

Education. Read, research, investigate: the issue, the stakeholders, the policies, the challenges and the potential solutions.
Organize. Write a step-by-step plan of action. What do you/your group require to move on to the next step. What is the goal? Organize people by holding meetings, setting job ownership and sharing in the work.
Network. Spread the word within your network, school, local government and special interest groups. Make connections. Grow support.
Funding. Look into grants and donations to fund your efforts.
Believe. Believe in yourself, your group and your goal.

He just won the 2009 American Music Award for Favourite Male Artist - Rap/Hip Hop. He owns a clothing line Rocaware. Co-owner of the NBA New Jersey Nets team. He once worked as the CEO of Def Jam Recordings.

Shawn Carter (better known as Jay-Z) is a major role model. Not only in hip hop. Or business. But also in giving back to the global community.

In 2006, he used the stage of his world tour to raise awareness about the global water shortage. The documentary "Diary of Jay-Z: Water for Life" documents this effort.

He has also been a strong supporter (both financially and as an activist) of the relief efforts of Hurricane Katrina in the United States.

Positive hip hop starts with positive artists.

Universal Children's Day

Today, November 20, is Universal Children's Day (as recommended by the National Assembly of the United Nations).

According to the United Nations, Universal Children's Day is; "...to be observed as a day of worldwide fraternity and understanding between children. It recommended that the Day was to be observed also as a day of activity devoted to promoting the ideals and objectives of the Charter and the welfare of the children of the world."

In Canada, The Honourable Beverly Oda, Minister of International Cooperation, marked the day by noting Canada's contribution to child welfare in Afghanistan.

Canada is the largest international donor towards polio eradication in Afghanistan. Working closely with the Government of Afghanistan, the World Health Organization and UNICEF, Canada hopes to completely eliminate polio in Afghanistan by 2009.

By understanding a child...one sets in motion the engagement of that child. And youth engagement is key to global fraternity.

One element is the Governor General's Youth Dialogue which includes blog posts on youth engagement, democracy and social connectivity. There is also a FaceBook group on the G.G'S YOUTH DIALOGUES 2009 - DIALOGUES JEUNESSE 2009 DE LA G.G.

Why is it a good read? Well, because The Governor General of Canada is doing good work by connecting with youth and promoting youth engagement within their own communities. Her office is making youth a priority. They are connecting with youth in their own mediums (blogs, Facebook, tours). Her office is creating youth discussion and thus motivation.

This is a valuable scholarship program for Canadian youth who are committed to positive community leadership coupled with interest in post-secondary education.

Applications are now being accepted for the TD Canada Trust Scholarships for Community Leadership Applications are being accepted until October 31, 2009.

The program rewards students who demonstrate academic excellence and extraordinary community leadership in various areas such as environmental cleanup, the promotion of social justice, and the fight against child poverty.

Each scholarship (there are 20) is valued at up to $70,000, including full tuition at any accredited university or college in Canada, mentorship opportunities, $7,500 a year towards living expenses and a guaranteed offer of summer employment at TD for up to four years.

How does an organization or group involve youth in decision-making? This boils down to how to engage, inspire and retain the youth in the organization's activities.

A source for guidance on this topic comes from 14Points to Successfully Involving Young People in Organizational Decision Making. The points for this list originate with Youth on Board a U.S. organization which supports youth engagement in community and society. Amongst the points for successful youth involvement, according to Youth on Board, include:

The Popularity Contest of Facebook and Youth

University of Guelph psychologists have done a study on youth and Facebook and have come to the conclusion that youth are driven to be popular on the addictive social media tool. The study by psychology graduate students Emily Christofides and Amy Muise was published in the journal CyberPsychology and Behaviour in June.

The thing is - is that youth share a lot of private information on the sites that they wouldn't normally put out in public. Photographs, e-mail addresses, school, hangouts and friends can all be posted for the webosphere to read. (*Note: if users set privacy settings they can restrict who sees what).

"The study did find a link between self-esteem and the disclosure of personal information. People with higher self-esteem scores were more likely to use Facebook's privacy settings."

The study examined the Facebook usage of undergraduates aged 17 to 24.

International Youth Internship Program

International Youth Internship Program presented through the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) has been renewed through to 2014.

This program is for Canadian graduates aged 19 to 30 inclusive. It provides the eligible youth with valuable international experience whilst building skills and knowledge.

Students must be out of school and out of work. They must be a post-secondary graduate (college, university, etc...). They must be legally entitled to work in Canada. And though it is not written, applicants should have an interest in engagement and global activities.

Lost Lyrics was a hip hop youth program presented at the Oakdale Community Centre (Toronto, ON) in 2008. It could not be verified if this program is still on-going yet it is an important program to spotlight.

"Lost Lyrics, an alternative education after school program that uses Hip Hop culture as a way of defining who we are and expressing a knowledge of self. The goal of the program is to get youth to critically analyze the world around them and utilize this new lens through creative arts such as rhyming, film, photography, beats production and more."

This program was (perhaps still is?) aimed at youth aged 11-14 years old as an after-school program.

The City of Toronto strike is affecting many groups of youth. From the Centre Island summer staff who cannot get to their jobs because the Island ferry service is not currently running, to city summer camp staff not working because camps have been cancelled. This strike is affecting the finances and futures of youth throughout the city.

If teens are not playing on the city basketball courts because they are temporary dump sites...then what are the kids doing? Where are the teens hanging out then?!

The unions are doing what they feel needs to be done. The city is doing what they feel needs to be done. However, lost in the middle are the youth who need these jobs to pay for tuition and safe areas to socialize in.

If you know a teen who has been affected by the strike:

encourage them to do some of their volunteer hours

encourage them to participate in an organized sport

encourage them to look elsewhere for a summer job

encourage them to start their own small summer business

This upcoming event will be held July 31, 2010 - August 13, 2010 - at the YILDIZ TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY (Istanbul, Turkey).

This is the 5th congress in this series - as in previous congress tradition - there is one main question for discussion; “What are the most effective ways that government, UN and other development aid agencies can use the incredible talent, energy and idealism of young people in their shared effort to make poverty history in a sustainable way and achieve the UN’s Millennium Development Goals?”

There is no participation fee to attend this global event. Applicants should be between the ages of 15-25 in order to take part in the congress.

The Nature of a Teen

The Globe and Mail ran an article - "Misunderstood (for reals)" where the author, Sarah Boesveld, interviewed University of Cambridge veterinary anatomist David Bainbridge about the nature of teens.

Dr. Bainbridge has written a book on the subject - "Teenagers: A Natural History"

The following is an excerpt from that interview:

This book is meant to explain why teenagers exist. Isn't there a simple answer – that it's just a natural bridge from childhood to adulthood?

Other animals that take a very long time to grow up, like whales and chimpanzees, they're all pretty much finished when they're about ten, whereas humans, though we live a similar length of time, it takes twice as long. The more I looked into this, the more I realized the second decade is really something that is unique to humans. Many of the things that really make us unique, like planning all of our highest cognitive functions, we develop when we're teenagers.

It is an interesting position - the second decade of development in a human's life creates experience and shapes who we become as adults.

Consider: are the teen years a natural stage of evolution or a marketing niche? Discuss...

Generation Y = Mini-Adults?

Is it right to expect teens to be mini-adults? Despite the fact that they have the means and opportunity to partake in international travel, study and work - it does not necessarily mean they are mini-adults. Today's teens still has financial and emotional dependence on their parents. Perhaps, more so than any other teen generation.

Snowplow parents have scheduled and handled every component of the modern teen life. Their dependence on their parents has been cultivated from birth.

To treat teens as mini-adults would be an injustice. Though they may be mature and educated - they simply don't have the experience of other teen generations.

As such, one must approach Generation Y with a coach's mentality. Support, guide and cheer.

Youth trends demonstrate that Generation Y wants to be engaged in meaningful projects - yet they aren't quite sure where to start. Those who want to connect with Generation Y need only present a starting point....

Toronto Life Editorial Internship Program Toronto Life's editorial internship is a four-month program for university graduates interested in working in the magazine industry.

Bain & Company internship For students between their third and fourth years of university, we offer the Associate Consultant Intern (ACI) opportunity. While the Summer Associate (SA) program is for students between their first and second years of business school.

The Toronto Star internships (3 internship programs)

The Toronto Star is once again offering a one-year internship program for young journalists. This year we will hire six reporting interns, two copy editing interns and a design intern.

Radio room reporters monitor emergency scanners, do police checks, monitor radio and television news and report stories that are often crime or trauma related. In addition to writing for the newspaper, radio room reporters file breaking news stories and updates to the website. Successful candidates also work shifts answering phones and providing support to the newsroom.

Summer program a demanding program because summer reporters and photographers are hired on vacation replacement contracts - meaning that as full-time staff disappear on vacations, summer interns are expected to step up to the demands of replacing them.

Mid-June already - do you know what your summer plans are? Many Canadian university students have already started summer jobs and internships...leaving high school students the scraps of summer opportunity.

What's a teen to do?!

Inquire at your local MP, MPP's and city councillor's office if they would welcome you as a summer volunteer. Office work and errands are good starting points to building a solid résumé. It's also a great opportunity to accumulate references for your good work.
Volunteer at a local children's centre or non-profit organization. These charities need your help. Be sure to ask if the volunteering can be put towards your required secondary school volunteer hours.
Take a summer school course. This is a great way to pick up an extra credit.
Take a course of interest. Sign up for a writing seminar or a arts workshop.
Build something. Whether it be building a house for a needy family (habitat for humanity) or building your own grassroots organization (perhaps your area needs a bike lane?) - building something is a good thing.

Just because you don't have summer plans - yet - doesn't mean there isn't a plan for the summer. Do something meaningful!

And don't forget that reaching out should also be inviting in. Ask for feedback, comment, brainstorming and tips. Generation Y want to be in on the conversation and innovation. They are also community-driven so don't be shy to ask them to "share with a friend".

This is like speed dating only for volunteering and specific to Generation Y. Timeraiser is a grass-roots organization which promotes civic engagement amongst young Canadians.

How it works:

Generation Y gathers for an evening of auction and nibblies. They bid on artwork by up-and-coming artists. However, the "bids" are not monetary bids - they are volunteer community hours. The winning "bid" gets the artwork and pays through their community hours.

While enjoying the evening, Generation Yers have the chance to meet and get more information on agencies which are looking for the engagement of the attendees.

It is a blend of nite-on-the-town, civic engagement and art accumulation (at a very friendly cost).

By 2008, Timeraiser had generated over 41,000 volunteer hours.

Does it make a difference if teens and young adults are engaged or disengaged with social movements? Principally - yes, it does matter.

Be it in politics, social activism or humanitarianism - youth are absolutely needed to engage. Not just for immediate action but also to grow their dedication "a change movement" for the years to come.

Youth today have grown up as team players. After school baseball teams, weekend hockey tournaments have taught them a strong sense of belonging, dedication and activation.

They believe that goals are attainable with work. They consider playing fields equal. They look at authority as coaches rather than guards.

When you try to get the attention of youth for your project, organization or business - consider your message as a call to action. Generation Y loves formal organization (and pick-up games too).

Give them a position and they will play. Give them the ball and they will go long. They still have one more in 'em!

Today's youth is slowly but progressively breaking down the barriers between industry and individual.

Look at today's cyber accomplishment - individual Ashton Kutcher (forgive the celeb element) beat out massive media machine CNN to +one million twitter followers.

Larry King spoke for the Media outlet when the contest was on:

"What are you thinking?" said Larry King in response to Kutcher taking on the media giant. Well, perhaps the actor knew the youth element better than the corporation.

We live in an age where one person can harness the power and savvy of one million followers (most likely members of Generation Y). This "story" - demonstrates the good of the Internet generation. Of youth who want to belong to a community to fight the machine, to connect for a cause and who are willing to contribute.

It shows one person can make a significant change to modern culture and history. It also demonstrates small pools of friends can collectively become an tsumani of change.

The story doesn't end there. Kutcher has promised to donate 10,000 mosquito nets to a global charity to pay it back.

The power of one -- it's worth a million.

Using Music to Educate

In the end, lyrics are poetry. The words speak of cultures, experiences, hopes & dreams, failure and futures.

From the legendary song of Billie Holiday - "God Bless The Child" this Jazz hit presents the values, wants, hopes and realities of life in the Jazz era (and even in modern day). In Salt-n-Pepa's "Let's Talk About Sex" the lyrics present an honest confrontation of a global issue.

Educators can use music on their blogs, vlogs, seminars, classrooms and powerpoint presentations to engage youth in their specific subjects.

The United Nations was established, by 51 countries, in 1945 to preserve peace by collective cooperation. It is not a government but it does facilitate votes to end conflict, engages in peacekeeping efforts and contributes to humanitarianism.

Under it's umbrella, the United Nations works for human justice and human rights. It has specialized agencies for food & agriculture, world health and education.

From their UN in Action playlists "Cameroon juvenile justice" - this video presents the life of youth imprisoned in overpopulated prisons in Cameroon. Some of the teens were imprisoned for begging or stealing - but they wait months - sometimes years - to be judged in court. The UN prepared this video to show how to improve conditions in the jails.

News: University Students Less Prepared

Did you see on the net, read in the paper, see on the news - faculty profs don't think university students make the grade.

A survey of close to 2,000 Ontario university faculty, released this week, presents that current 1st year students are not "prepared" ("prepared" meaning; having sufficient written, numeric, critical thinking, independence & self-motivation skills) compared to those students in the same classrooms and courses three years ago.

According to the survey, the respondents reported that current 1st year students have issues with;

Lower level of maturity
Lack of required writing, mathematical and critical thinking skills
Poor research skills as evidenced by an over reliance on Internet tools like Wikipedia as external research sources
Expectation of success without the requisite effort

Inability to learn independently

This is a big wake-up call for all students to step up their personal and classroom skills. The profs are watching and spreading the word about the "Wikipedia Generation".

MIT has unlocked the knowledge for all. MITOPENCOURSEWARE (yes, click on that - it will take you to the courseware site) offers free lecture notes, videos and exams from MIT. The information spans 1800 courses with translations into Chinese, Spanish, Portuguese, Thai and more.

Humanities, Engineering, Science are among the many departments that are breaking the boundaries in knowledge sharing.

You don't need to register - it is simply free for use. The couseware does not contribute to an MIT certificate (no diploma here folks!) but it does help self-learners and students use the material as a reference source.

Sustainable Education

Careers in sustainability are growing despite global economics. Environmental careers are not just for scientists - but also students in the humanities, business and law.

Many youth see potential in a career in sustainable living. It is a world-wide challenge for industries to be cleaner and greener and it is Generation X who will make this happen.

The University of British Columbia has a Centre for Sustainability. Ryerson University (in Toronto) has just launched a new sustainability certificate program (Search: G. Raymond Chang School of Continuing Education).

Post-secondary education in sustainability marries many students' personal passions; engaging in change and global impact.

Environmental responsibility is high on the agendas of many companies, small and large. It attracts students because a career in sustainability is fresh and growing.

Student Stress

According to a Canadian study*: "42 per cent of teens in Canada rarely or never ask for help when they feel overwhelmed." This is not a surprise when you consider most Generation Y-ers attend school, hold part time jobs, pursue extra curricular activities, do homework, enjoy a social life, volunteer community hours and more. That's a lot to stress about.

It's important that youth have people they can speak to about their stresses, their problems and their ambitions. Parents, friends, and trusted teachers are all good resources for asking for help - or just listening.

It's about that time. Time to start thinking about summer opportunities for youth. Create or update your résumé (a good resource for résumés and cover letters is at the Microsoft Template site - yes, click that).

Be sure to include volunteer positions, group affiliations and computer skills on your work applications. Experience doesn't just mean a gig which you have been paid $$ for - sometimes the best experience is knowledge.

It is also the time to start researching and applying for summer exchange (work or study) programs. Going abroad is a life changing event where you grow your knowledge of culture, geography and language. It also sharpens your life skills; responsibility, decision making, communication and ambition.

Summer opportunites allow youth to pursue a passion, get work experience, travel abroad and define their interests. By hiring students, organizations contribute to knowledge sharing and reap the benefit of a technically savvy and motivated generation.

Becoming an organizer of a youth activism project requires leadership, priority setting and a whole lot of passion for a cause.

Amnesty.com has a youth activist toolkit to help youth (and groups of youth) organize and plan activities for a project.

It's a great tool to help raise awareness in your school and community. It also gives you good tips about doing presentations, letter writing campaigns, writing press releases and conducting media interviews -- about a project.

NIMBY-ism

What is a NIMBY? It's an acronym for "Not In My Back Yard". It describes the attitude of persons/groups who take a negative stance against a development/activity in their neighbourhoods - deeming it a bad thing.

However, the persons/group would be perfectly happy if the development/activity occurred somewhere else - and the NIMBY was able to benefit from the service.

Like the group of protestors; objecting to the idea of a wind farm two to four kilometers off the Scarborough Bluffs. Or the NIMBY-ism in sending Ontario trash to Michigan landfills.

It's self-serving to benefit from services yet object to the location of that service. If you make the trash - you should take responsibility for it.

Hole-in-the-Wall Project

This quote from The Toronto Star article "Cyber Classroom a first for slum kids" is a clear truth.

All over the world there are children who are not in cyberspace. They aren't even in classrooms. The article notes that a New Delhi survey revealed; 242,000 children - who live in slums - do not go to school. Poverty is the biggest contributor to lack of education.

Hole-In-The-Wall is a non-profit organization that has set up 300 computers in slums across India to bridge the education gap. The initiative is financed by an Indian software company. The computers - are in fact - outdoor computer kiosks - housed in whole within the red brick walls that surround schools. The monitors are protected with Plexiglas (as are the keyboards). Metal tops swing down at night to protect them from vandalism.

In cities, schools pay for the cost of the Hole-in-the-Wall computers. However, in rural areas they are powered by solar powered batteries.

The children still do not attend school - but through the computers they learn Hindi and English through educational games and videos (and they learn about using a computer all the while).

For the slum kids - this project is the next best thing to a real teacher.

Students entitled to higher grades?

A recent article in The New York Times presented the growing trend towards students feeling entitlement towards higher grades.

Many university students expect B (or higher) grades simply for attending lectures, completing the required reading and handing in basic coursework. Should they receive less than expected; students often pass the failure on to the fault of the professor.

No longer do students "...“read for knowledge and write with the goal of exploring ideas.” Instead, students follow the set syllabus to ensure making the grade.

The article quotes Professor Greenberger [English Professor University of Maryland] "...the sense of entitlement could be related to increased parental pressure, competition among peers and family members and a heightened sense of achievement anxiety."

A generation ago, students wouldn't even think about going to a teacher or professor to complain about a grade. The hierarchy of education was respected and followed. However, "kids today" have grown up with snowplow parents who step in with coaches, teachers and even employers to ensure their children get what is theirs. In addition, hierarchy has blurred as students' technical experience surpasses their teachers.

It has all created a circumstance where students feel justified - entitled - to visit a professor's office hours to dispute a C paper.

Is this aggressive? Snow plowing? Or sound?

Powerful tools.

However, I am obligated to show you the flip side of this topic. The lost art of speech. A good speech - be it a class presentation, workshop or speaking engagement - has the strength of personal connection.

Would Martin Luther King's "I Had a Dream" be as powerful it if were a slide show?

Would Nelson Mandela's address upon leaving Victor Verster prison be as dignified as a blog?

There is an art to speech. It can motivate. Inspire. Educate.

Just watch the 2007 movie "The Great Debaters"; the remarkable story of Wiley College's winning debate team of the early 1930s.

Blogs and PowerPoint presentations are important tools - but students - don't forget - change has been brought - with your voice.

K'naan got his exit visa - the last day the U.S. government remained open - as the Somalia government collapsed in 1991. He travelled to the states and then settled in Toronto - safely with his family. He learnt English through rap and hip hop music. Since then, he has become a world known poet and rapper.

He mixes rap, African beats and soul into his own musical genius. His popularity is gaining momentum and he is on the verge of becoming an outright global star.

His second album - "Troubadour" is set for release on February 24, 2009.

Blog On! -- In the Classroom

According to the New York Times,"The Future of Reading" isn't just paper based. Librarians and classroom teachers (from elementary to high school) are ushering in the digital age. They are exciting, engaging and luring kids to read, not just in print, but on-line in e-zines, books, educational video games, PowerPoint presentations, newspapers and more.

Using digital formats attract students - of all ages. It also teaches them how to question what they read - by cross-checking with other digital sources (or library shelves). It also marries well with cultural diversity -- allowing students to read in languages other than English.

Look at this PowerPoint presentation for 3rd grade vocabulary. Students could use this as a learning tool for both motor skills and language acquisition.

Fundraising for your youth project

You've got the passion. The drive. The determination. The network of volunteers. The next step to turn your grassroots movement into a living project is through fundraising. From starting a breakfast program in your school to sending aid to Africa...a bit of $$ can help you along.

Fundraising can be small scale or larger - depending on your efforts and needs of the project.

For smaller efforts:

canvass for donations through your school and community
host donation events such as danceathons, sports events or sales events (custom t-shirts are good sale items)

For bigger project:

Research grants which match up with your project (community, national and international grants are available - check on-line)
Apply for community project awards
Merge with other volunteer projects which match your project's ideals
Approach businesses with a contribution letter. Include what your project is about. Who will benefit from the project. Who is involved. How you think this specific organization can help (i.e. for a breakfast program - write to a bakery asking for donation of bread).

Filling out grant forms, letter writing and phone follow-ups are good life skills experiences. You can add these experiences to your résumé and job/volunteer/student exchange applications.

Grassroots Movements

When youth create a grassroots movement (that being teaming up for a community project by volunteering their time and efforts) it is a great thing. Great because Generation Y are a dynamic, educated, connected, and engaged group. They don't just work in a box - they look beyond the box - to get a problem solved.

A grassroots movement could be; removing graffiti from the basketball courts, a breakfast program for your school or more bike lanes in the city.

Whatever your project is; it starts with a leader. Someone who builds a volunteer network for the specific cause.

How do you grow your project?

Research your cause

Host meetings

Speak to "officials"

Network

Create buzz

Make a plan

Fund raise

Youth - Choices & Decisions

January/February holds many deadline dates for training, apprenticeship and post-secondary education applications. What are you going to do next year? For the next few years? For the next wave of your life?

I've put together a few resources which might help in making your choices & decisions.

Regarding "Financial Opportunities", it is important to research what is available to you. You may think training or post-secondary education is out of reach...but you may be uninformed. From awards, grants and scholarships to finacial aid and student loans - there are many financial opportunities out there (tip: some of these look good on your résumé). Check out Taking it Global, Canada Student Loans and Grants and Canadian Scholarships and Bursaries for more information.

It might also be valuable to research your choices for a "gap year" experience. A gap year is one where you take an opportunity to volunteer abroad between the last year of high school and first year of post-secondary education. These experiences can help focus your interest, gain culture and language skills and also engage in the global village.

Inspirational Canadians

David Takayoshi Suzuki is inspirational to Canadian youth. He survived living in internment camps with his family (camps here in Canada) during the second world war.

He went on to earn his Ph.D. in zoology, then became a professor at the University of British Columbia for over 40 years and then he became a television broadcaster through his cbc show "The Nature of Things" as well as many documentaries.

He has been presented with over 22 honorary degrees.

He is bonded with climate change activism. His message is that there are simple things families can do to protect nature and lessen their global impact.

He is a man who has overcome personal injustice, acquired education and used his voice to engage others.

Godessa is an all-female rap trio out of Cape Town, South Africa.

In their bio the members of Godessa note;

We would like to present an image of success that is not based on scantily clad bodies and make the youth aware of issues that could change their lives. Our lyrics are proudly based on what we have or people we know have experienced.

This group proves that hip-hop MC's can - should - be role models. By staying true and courageous - their voices and message are heard around the world.

January 14, 2009 is a BIG day. It is the deadline for Ontario secondary students to submit their applications to the Ontario Universities' Application Centre.

The next big crunch day will be February 17, 2009 (the deadline for receipt of first-semester grades).

What does this have to do with youth engagement? It's a call to youth to T.C.B. (Take Care of Business). This is the first step towards owning your own education, future and career. It's something you need to do. Not a parent, caregiver, employer, friend, aid worker nor mentor.

It's you.

Your deadline for your future.

It's about taking responsibility. Organizing. Getting informed. These aren't just tasks but actual - essential - life skills. Valuable skills that will get you internships, jobs and great life experiences. Skills that can change communities, politics and social reform.

Now is the foundation for the term "building blocks of your life". You are building, growing and developing your skills. It happens now. Make it happen.

Ayiti, a role-playing video game in which the player assumes the roles of family members living in rural Haiti. Over the course of the game, the player must choose among and balance various goals, such as achieving education, making money, staying healthy, and maintaining happiness while encountering unexpected events.

This is media targeted at youth. Smart media. Fun media. A great site to share with your on-line network.
